At the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP, Inc.) we dedicate every minute of the day to our amazing patients: the gentle giants of the forest, the endangered Mountain Gorilla. There are approximately 740 Mountain Gorillas left on earth; they live only in two small parks, one in Uganda and one that includes a corner of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In order to ensure a healthy future for this special animal, we monitor the gorillas on a regular basis, provide life-saving medical care if needed, conduct health studies, and do all we can to build local capacity in veterinary medicine and ecosystem health. Because it takes healthy people to save wildlife, we run an employee health program for park staff. We also provide health care and monitoring for the endangered eastern lowland or Grauer's gorilla in Congo, and for a handful of orphaned gorillas. Our team includes eight veterinarians, the gorilla doctors, one laboratory manager, house and office staff, and orphaned gorilla caretakers. With your support and understanding, there's no question that we can protect the lives of these magnificent gorillas in their lush, green, mountain habitat. But we cannot do it alone. |
